A Guide to Column Radiators
What is a Column Radiator?
Inspired by traditional cast iron Victorian school-house designs, Column radiators are made from hollow tubes of steel and are an ever-popular choice when it comes to home heating. With an enduring design and dependable, powerful performance, column radiators offer a traditional-looking alternative to the sleek style of modern designer radiators.
These radiators consist of vertical tubes that are grouped to form columns, that make up sections - typically the more columns/sections you have, the larger the radiator is, and the higher the output it produces. Unlike the typical designer flat panel radiators (Type 11, 21, & 22), there are no single column radiators. Instead, you will commonly find 2, 3 & 4 column radiators being stocked by radiator retailers.
Part of their popularity lies in the broad range of options that column radiators provide; numerous sizes in vertical and horizontal orientations, curved for bay windows, electric powered, as well as column radiators that come with a seat, not to mention the wide range of colours and finishes that are available.
How Do Column Radiators Work?
Column radiators consist of vertical tubes that are grouped to form sections. These columns are connected at the top and bottom to allow hot water to circulate through them, which then radiates heat into the surrounding area. As the air around the radiator warms up, it rises, creating a natural convection current. Cooler air is drawn in at the bottom, heated, and rises, circulating warmth throughout the room.
Because of their design with multiple columns, they provide a large surface area for heat exchange, making them highly effective at warming rooms. Additionally, their vertical structure makes them space-efficient and stylish, often used in both modern and traditional homes.
Column Radiators: Are They Efficient?
Column radiators are an efficient way of heating your home effectively, and this is due to a number of factors:
Large Surface Area - Column radiators have a large surface area due to their multiple columns. This design allows them to release more heat into the room compared to flat-panel radiators of the same dimensions.
Heat Retention - Newer column radiators made from aluminium or steel heat up and cool down more quickly, making them ideal for homes that need fast adjustable heating. Cast Iron column radiators in particular, are known for their excellent heat retention, and remain hot for longer.
Energy Efficiency with Thermostatic Controls - Column radiators are usually paired with thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), allowing you to control the temperature in individual rooms. This zoned heating approach ensures that energy isn’t wasted on heating rooms that don’t need it.
Durability - Column radiators, especially those made from cast iron, are very durable and built to last.
Column radiators can be very efficient, especially when paired with modern thermostatic controls and an appropriate heating system. Their high heat output, good heat retention (especially with cast iron), and adaptability to different heating needs make them a popular and efficient choice in many homes.
